Trailer warranty: what is covered and how to keep it

Structure, corrosion, components and the legal warranty: understand your trailer warranty and avoid losing it.

A trailer warranty is not a single block. It is made up of the trailer maker’s warranty, the warranties of the component makers and, in Québec, the legal warranty. Knowing who covers what saves you surprises.

01

The trailer maker’s warranty

It mainly covers the structure: frame, welds, crossmembers, and often corrosion. The length varies a lot from one brand to another. Ideal Cargo, for example, covers the galvanized structure of its EVO CORE enclosed trailers against corrosion for life, for the original buyer, offers a 10-year structural warranty, and covers its biocomposite panels against delamination.

Ask for the written warranty of the exact trailer you are buying: its length, what it covers, whether it transfers at resale and how to file a claim.

02

Component warranties

Axles, brakes, tires, hydraulic cylinders and pumps, batteries and winches are often covered by their own maker. Keep the documents that come with them: a component claim is often settled with them.

03

What a warranty does not cover

Wear parts, such as worn tires, brake linings and bulbs, are generally not covered. Neither is damage caused by overloading, an accident, misuse or lack of maintenance. Modifying the structure, such as drilling or welding the frame, can void the warranty on the affected part.

04

How to keep your warranty

  • Respect the trailer’s GVWR and payload
  • Follow the maintenance in the manual and keep dated invoices
  • Have accessories installed without drilling or welding the structure unless the maker approves
  • Report a problem as soon as you notice it, with photos and the date

Warranties on the brands we sell

At Ideal Cargo, the galvanized structure of EVO CORE enclosed trailers is covered against corrosion for life for the original buyer, with a 10-year structural warranty. Weberlane offers a one-year full warranty on all its trailers. For each trailer, we give you the maker’s written terms at purchase.

06

Does a warranty follow the trailer at resale?

It depends on the maker. Some warranties, like Ideal Cargo’s corrosion coverage, are limited to the original buyer; others transfer to the new owner for the rest of the period. Before buying a used trailer still under warranty, ask for the original invoice and the transfer terms.

07

The legal warranty in Québec

When an individual buys a trailer from a merchant, the Consumer Protection Act adds a legal warranty: the trailer must be fit for its intended use and last a reasonable time, given its price and conditions of use. This warranty adds to the maker’s warranty; it does not replace it. The Office de la protection du consommateur (new tab) explains your options.
