Snowmobile trailers

A snowmobile trailer carries one or more snowmobiles to the trails, the cottage or an outfitter. Enclosed, it protects the sleds from road salt, calcium and slush; open, it is simpler and lighter. At Martin Remorques, our Ideal Cargo enclosed trailers with a ramp door and our open trailers are suited to hauling snowmobiles.

Snowmobile trailers

Why an enclosed trailer for a snowmobile?

On the highway in winter, a snowmobile on an open trailer takes the salt, calcium and slush thrown up by every vehicle. In an enclosed trailer, it arrives clean and dry, ready to go, and your bags, helmets and fuel cans travel with it.

The Sport Zone’s ramp door lets you drive the snowmobile in, and its floor anchors hold it during the trip. At the cottage, the trailer becomes a locked shed.

Types of snowmobile trailers

An open tilt trailer, often aluminum, takes one or two snowmobiles side by side: the deck tilts and the sled drives on. Light and affordable, it does leave the sleds exposed to road salt and snow.

An enclosed trailer keeps the sleds under cover. A 6 × 12 ft trailer takes one snowmobile and its gear. For two sleds one behind the other, plan on about 20 ft of floor; for three or four, move up to an 8.5 ft wide trailer, 20 ft or longer. A front door lets you drive out the front without backing up.

Choosing the right snowmobile trailer size

Add up the length of your snowmobiles, with a little room in front and behind to move around. A 6 × 12 ft trailer suits one snowmobile and gear; for two or more, look at longer or wider trailers.

Also think about the door height and the ramp angle if your snowmobile has a tall windshield. We check the measurements with you.

Snowmobile trailer equipment

Glide strips on the floor guide the skis and protect the floor from the track. A ramp extension softens the slope for low sleds. Interior lighting, hooks for helmets and suits, and a floor that drains easily make the trailer practical after a day on the trails.

Our workshop installs glide strips and the equipment you need, and our parts department orders storage and tie-down accessories.

Weight, brakes and winter care

A snowmobile weighs about 200 to 300 kg. Two sleds, their gear and an enclosed trailer quickly go over 1,300 kg, and the trailer then needs brakes on all its load-bearing wheels. In snow and slush, keep the lights clean and check that they work before every trip.

At the end of the season, wash the trailer with fresh water, underside included, to remove salt and calcium, then have the bearings and brakes checked. A galvanized structure, like on Ideal Cargo EVO CORE trailers, stands up much better to our winter corrosion.

Snowmobile trailers at Martin Remorques

The 7 × 12 ft Ideal Cargo Sport Zone, with 80 in of interior height and a 74 in door, clears sleds with tall windshields. The 6 × 12 ft, at the standard 74 in height, takes one snowmobile and its gear. Both have a 2,000 lb rear ramp door, a side door, four 5,000 lb floor anchors and a built-in loading light.

Their R5 insulated walls limit condensation after a day on the trails, and their galvanized structure has a lifetime corrosion warranty. For several sleds, we order the trailer in the right length.

We also order Weberlane enclosed snowmobile trailers, in steel or aluminum, with a front and a rear ramp to drive in and out. Options include a kickboard with ski track channel, E-Track, D-rings, storage cabinets and a side fuel door.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Your questions,
our answers

Ask a question
Is a regular enclosed trailer suitable for a snowmobile?

Yes, if it has a ramp door and a floor that stands up to skis and tracks. Glide strips protect the floor and make loading easier; our workshop can install them.

Can I haul an ATV in summer and a snowmobile in winter in the same trailer?

Yes, that is the advantage of an enclosed trailer with a ramp door: it works all year, for the ATV or motorcycle in summer and the snowmobile in winter.

Do you have snowmobile trailers in stock?

Yes: our Sport Zone enclosed trailers with a ramp door are made for this. Call us to see the ones on the lot and talk about how many snowmobiles you need to haul.

How many snowmobiles fit in an enclosed trailer?

A 6 × 12 ft takes one snowmobile and its gear. For two sleds in line, plan on about 20 ft of floor; for three or four, an 8.5 ft wide trailer, 20 ft or longer.

Does a snowmobile trailer need brakes?

Yes as soon as the trailer weighs 1,300 kg or more with its load, or more than half the weight of the towing vehicle. That is often the case for an enclosed trailer with two snowmobiles.

Aluminum or steel snowmobile trailer?

Aluminum is lighter and does not rust, a plus on our salted roads. Galvanized steel is tougher and often less expensive. Weberlane offers its snowmobile trailers in both materials, and Ideal Cargo EVO CORE trailers have a galvanized steel structure.

Why a front door on a snowmobile trailer?

With a front ramp and a rear ramp, you drive in through the back and out through the front, without backing the sled out of the trailer. It is faster and safer, especially with several sleds.
